Howdy! 👋 My name is Yan Shi, and I'm currently searching for opportunities in data roles or software engineering roles at progressive organizations. I firmly believe in using my skillset for an organization or company that aligns with my values. I'm interested in work at the intersections of data, communications, social justice, labor, and education.
I started as a digital intern on the digital communications team in June 2018 assisting with social listening and media management during the AFSCME vs JANUS Supreme Court case. I transitioned into the Digital Media Data Specialist role in August 2018 at the end of my internship. I was promoted to Senior Strategist II in December 2019. At AFSCME, I've worn several different types of hats. I've worked on ETL projects, using data sources from APIs to mirrors. I've experience in Action Network, EveryAction/VAN, Mobile Commons, Hustle, and more.
I migrated over 40+ pages to new templates and components and wrote site copy when needed. I've also copy-edited, wrote, and researched stories on alumni, SOC events, and current students.
I diagnosed and developed solutions for various requests assigned to me via JIRA for the digital team. I consulted with stakeholders and built another iteration of The Globe under two weeks, using Python, Django, and location APIs.
Wrote articles and updated local and national voting numbers for the 2016 election. I have several bylines for local news, wire news, and entertainment articles. I was also responsible for cutting and uploading videos from the news broadcasts.
I managed, edited, and organized content for a large, nationwide project, Trump Nation and Clinton Nation. I also developed and stood up coding projects using Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and Django.
I was an office assistant for 10+ professors and was responsible for daily data entry, data tracking, document processing, course material preparation, and handling of nonsensitive and sensitive information.
I edited B-roll and media using Adobe Premiere and AVID. I was tasked with biweekly updates for the "A Lighter Look at the News" exhibit. I also digitized and encoded tapes and media using StreamZHD techonlogy, and troubleshot software and computer hardware issues on desktop and web. One of my favorite projects was assisting and creating content for the FBI exhibit, which opened in November 2015.
During my time at American University, I was a teaching assistant for two computer science classes, where I held office hours for homework, graded work, and provided feedback to students. I also held other leadership positions, such as holding the PR chair for AU's Association of Computing Machinery and the Asian American Student Union. I was also the web editor for our investigative journalism magazine, American Way of Life, where I oversaw our migration and redesign of our website.
During my studies, I had several assignments that focused on tv/video production. Included in the link is a video reel of my tv production course as well as my video projects where I focused my videos to center around stories from communities within DC.
Included in the link are writing clips from my time in my role as an office assistant at the School of Communication, NBC4-Washington, and student-led organizations.
I'm comfortable with using Python to create solutions to problems. I've used Python in the context of ETL processes, web scraping, and the one-off personal project. I've experience in using packages e.g. pandas, beautifulsoup, csv, luigi, leaflet, Django, and more.
